What does kla-how-eya mean?
Kla-how-eya is a welcoming greeting meaning , “how are you” or “welcome” The name comes from the Chinook language which was primarily used for trading purposes.

When did your organization begin?
Originally Kla-how-eya was called Surrey Aboriginal Cultural Society (SACS), Kla-how-eya has become our new name to compliment our new centre. Starting in 1996 Surrey Aboriginal Cultural Society has steadily grown to be what it is todayl.

Who do you service?
The services here at Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Centre of SACS will be delivered by Aboriginal staff and Elders. We are centrally located and continuously look for innovative ways to address Aboriginal social issues.
Kla-how-eya services reaches out to the South Fraser Region, primarily Surrey, White Rock and Delta. Combining these three areas the 2001 census indicates approximately 8,500 Aboriginals residing in the area. Canada Statistics states, “Aboriginals share of total population is on the rise.” Furthermore, an article on the Maple Leaf Web called, “Native Social Issues in Canada,” identifies how about 45% of the total Aboriginal population lives in cities and this population is expected to grow. It also mentions the Human Development indicator and how off reserve populations rank 36th, the on reserve population ranks 68th, while Canada as a whole ranks in the top ten. Giving an indication of the inequality of life between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities in Canada. The progress to improve the quality of life is slow moving but here at Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Centre we strive to promote culture to keep our identity to guide our people.

What types of programs do you offer?
We offer a variety of services ranging from, elders tea and luncheon, homework clubs, drop in centre for children and families, youth drop in centre, Culinary Arts program, Kla-how-eya Employment Services, Mentor program, Family Development Program, Traditional Kitchen, Tool Time for youth, Talking Circles for youth, men and women, youth programs and just outright good company. So come on down and learn more about how you can participate.
